Central Equity Limited extracts interesting articles for readers from the media releases of the Victorian Government

From the office of the Minister for Major Projects and Tourism and Assisting on Multicultural Affairs the Honourable John Pandazopoulos, MP

News Release published, Wednesday, Sept 20, 2000

Victoria a Winner Worldwide

Images of Victoria are being beamed to millions of viewers around the world capitalising on the global spotlight on the Olympic host nation, the Minister for Major Projects and Tourism, John Pandazopoulos said today.

"These images of Victoria will be broadcast to a global audience offering the state unparalleled exposure. Never before have images of Victorian attractions reached so many people during prime time television," he said.

"At a time of heightened awareness and desirability of Australia as an exciting destination, this is sure to translate directly into more international visitors to Victoria."

The Olympics is estimated to attract an extra 405,000 international visitors for Victoria for the seven year window of opportunity, from 1997 to 2004.

As part of an ongoing strategy, Tourism Victoria has provided free footage to the international broadcasters of the Olympic Football matches in Melbourne. This includes images of the Twelve Apostles, the Grampians, Yarra Valley and Wilson's Promontory.

Footage was also provided to the American broadcasters of the Australia v USA basketball matches held at Melbourne Park which were broadcast to millions of US basketball fans.

As well, images of Victoria were incorporated into postcard segments which were produced by SOBO (the Sydney Olympics Broadcasting Organisation) and have been offered to all accredited international broadcasters.

A new show reel of Melbourne and Victoria's best attractions and landscapes has been produced by Tourism Victoria which includes aerial footage, regional locations, sporting precincts and the icons of the State.

From this month, broadcasters of all international events held in Victoria will be offered the show reel to incorporate into their program. Broadcasters use the footage for play-ins and play-outs leading into or out of commercial breaks.

"This is part of the Government's long term strategy of spreading awareness of Victoria as a premier tourism destination to potential visitors around the world," Mr Pandazopoulos said.

"As a result of exposure during the Sydney Olympic Games, world-wide interest in Australia will be at an all-time peak and we intend to capitalise on this.

"This further reaffirms Victoria's strength as the events capital of Australia. By offering the broadcasters footage of our tourist attractions and landscapes, both in the city and the regions, viewers around the world will be able to see more than just a sporting venue," he said.
