Melbourne - The Garden State of Victoria
By Eddie Kutner.
Managing Director, Central Equity Limited.

Melbourne was nominated the world's most livable city and one of its main attractions is the outstanding array of parks and gardens. It is no wonder that Melbourne is the capital of the Garden State of Victoria. It is one of the first thing visitors' notices when they arrive in Melbourne.

The City of Melbourne boasts more than 650 hectares of beautiful public gardens and parklands. The famous Royal Botanic Gardens covering 40 hectares of parkland with more than 60,000 plant species. South of the city near St Kilda Road, other major parks include the Fawkner Park, Flagstaff, Treasury and Fitzroy Gardens, Queen Victoria Gardens and Kings Domain.

St Kilda Road is Melbourne's most beautiful and prestigious treelined boulevard. The botanical St Kilda Road is lined with a variety of trees, lawns and garden plantations making it arguably the most attractive boulevarde in Australia. Along St Kilda Road you can experience everything from fine art, theatre and stylish dining to magnificent parks and historical monuments. A short ride on one of the trams along St Kilda Road will take you past a number of magnificent gardens, sculptures and fountains. St Kilda Road is within easy walking distance of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, National Tennis Centre and the Glasshouse Basketball Stadium.

Another famous Melbourne park is Albert Park & Lake which is home to the Australian Grand Prix which attracts tourists from all over the world. Albert Park Lake is also an attraction for cyclists, roller bladers, joggers, fresh water yachtsmen and golfers. In fact, there is an 18 hole championship golf course plus a modern golf driving range. Nearby is the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre built by the State Government which houses a huge variety of sport activities including squash, basketball, table tennis and badminton. In addition, there is an Olympic size swimming pool, leisure wave pools, cafes, gymnasium and child minding facilities. The centre allows for local residents to benefit from its services.

The greenery of the parks and palms of St Kilda Beach is very popular. This fashionable and lively area is well known for its cosmopolitan nature and unique charm. A sunbathed promenade lined with continental style outdoor cafes, many with breathtaking views. The Sunday market is where you can buy finely made art, craft and souvenirs.

St Kilda's westerly aspect faces Port Philip Bay and provides Melbourne with a wonderful range of amenities. St Kilda is home to the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron and St Kilda Marina for prestige powerboats. It uniquely boasts a wild life sanctuary for the little penguins. Windsurfers have their own popular reserved area adjacent to the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron Juniors Training Centre and the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia Victorian Centre.

The beauty of Melbourne's gardens, parklands and beaches is an important consideration for many residents choosing to live closer to the city. This is an important factor that Central Equity considers when purchasing a site for residential development. To learn more about Central Equity's latest property release click here.
